German Wine Regions

The production of wine in Germany started when the Romans came to Trier. They wanted to use Trier as an intermediate storage place for the Roman wine that was supposed to be transported to England. However, they quickly realized it was better to grow the wine in the area itself. So Mosel and the Rhein was the first wine regions in Germany.

Today there are officially 13 major wine regions in Germany.

In Germany, the wine regions are classified according to the quality category of the wine grown in that region. 

There are four quality groups, which are: Tafelwein, Landwein, Qualitätswein (QbA) and Prädikatswein. Not all regions are allowed to produce the QbA and the Prädikatswein. The ones that do are further subdivided into four categories, in descending order of size - Anbaugebiet (a major wine region), Bereich (a district within the wine region), Großlage (a collection of vineyards within a district) and Einzellage (a single vineyard).  

There are a total of 41 Bereiche, 160 Großlagen and 2,632 Einzellagen in Germany.

The wine-growing regions in Germany are concentrated in the south and southwestern part, with the exception of Saale-Unstrut and Sachsen which are in the east.
